Hillary Clinton’s convention

By Carlos Alberto Montaner

Tim Kaine HillaryOne day before the Democratic convention, Hillary Clinton traveled to Florida to introduce her vice presidential candidate: Tim Kaine, senator from Virginia and former governor of that state. A moderate Democrat, friendly, known as a decent person who learned Spanish as a missionary in Honduras. He taught young men to work as carpenters or welders while debating with himself whether he should become a priest or a politician. He opted for public service and has not lost an election in the United States since.

The convention had four main objectives:

• To launch Hillary Clinton’s candidacy as the bearer of an optimistic and positive message about the United States (in contrast with the somber and decadent country pictured by Trump) at the head of a united Democratic Party and to present, in passing, her human profile.

• To appease a substantial part of Bernie Sanders’ voters, almost all of them young radicals who favor vegetarian socialism, mistrustful of Hillary’s links with Wall Street and the establishment, to whom they don’t forgive that, half a century ago, she peeked into politics as a “Goldwater girl” within the Young Republicans, even though in later elections she supported Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern, the Bernie Sanderses of that tumultuous era of hippies and scraggly long hair.

• To demolish the image of Donald Trump by persuading the voters that he is, in reality, a swindler (Bloomberg called him “a con man”), a megalomaniac, an ignorant, inexperienced and hypocritical man who cannot be trusted with the nuclear codes, lest he set the world on fire.

• To convince the voters that Hillary is a trustworthy person and reduce the high segment of Americans (55 percent) who have, from the start, a negative opinion of her. To this end, she was much aided by the splendid speeches by Michelle and Barack Obama. The president’s emphatic statement that no one else has attempted to reach the White House with as much merit and experience (Bill Clinton and himself included) did not fall on deaf ears.

To a degree, Hillary achieved those four objectives but not in a definitive manner. By this time in the campaign, more than 80 percent of the voters have decided for whom they will vote and, save a stunning revelation, the battle is limited to winning over a handful of undecided and independent voters who will tilt the balance in one direction or the other.

Before the convention, Hillary was 3 percentage points below Trump in the CNN poll, but afterward she placed 1 point above in the Rasmussen Report. All of this is within the margin of error in this type of survey. In other words, nobody can be sure of the result.

Oddly, Hillary’s triumph could come from those Republicans who are dissatisfied with Trump’s candidacy, the way the “Reagan Democrats,” a basic nucleus of the neocons, contributed decisively to the Republican victory over Jimmy Carter in 1980.

First to quit the GOP was journalist George Will. Then came conservative historian and Republican guru Daniel Pipes, who resigned after 44 years as a member because he feels antipodal to Trump. He said so in an article in The Philadelphia Inquirer on July 21: Trump’s defeat in November is convenient for the Republicans, who can then eliminate his influence within the organization and rebuild it from the inside.

These Republicans don’t forget that Ronald Reagan, instead of erecting a wall, issued an amnesty that normalized the presence in the U.S. of millions of undocumented immigrants, almost all of them from Mexico. Or that it was George H. W. Bush, convinced of the importance of free trade, who first committed himself to the Free Trade Agreement that linked the U.S. to Canada and Mexico. Or that George W. Bush strengthened the nation’s ties to NATO and launched the concept of “compassionate conservatism” because the market is not inconsistent with solidarity with the neediest.

Barack Obama hinted at this during his remarkable speech to the convention. He told the Republicans that the party of Lincoln today is the Democratic Party. It is open to Afro-Americans, women and minorities, and he invited Republicans to vote for Hillary.

I don’t think that many will do it, but Pipes has already announced that he might write in Gary Johnson, a former Republican and former governor of New Mexico, who grew tired of a party that flirted with isolationism, protectionism and racism, three anathemas for any person who’s convinced of the values of freedom.

We cannot put on a side the 90s when Bill Clinton was president and that besides all the shows and impeachment over women that he harrased, there was the moneys received from china. Johnny Chong was a rep from the chinese red army who was the guy that gave those monies to the clintons. Clinton released to the chinese all the technology for sattelites. Years later they brought down a satelite with that technology. He made the most favorite commercial country out of china. All this info was published by the Daily Telegraph, CNN and New York Times. a senator was very upset about all of this his name was Joe Biden.Congress made Clinton sign underoath a document which expressed that national security was never at risk. Why they dont talk about this after everybody knows how Hillary violated all the security rules that where established. Now several enemy countries have her emails. What more do you need to stop her from becoming president of the US.?
