In the book One Hundred Hours with Fidel, the Cuban leader explains to journalist Ignacio Ramonet: ‘One day I gave to Eusebio Leal, the Historian of the City of Havana, some 17 thousand gifts (…) then I handed over from pajamas to some of those watches worth 6,000 or 7,000 dollars, to works of art, everything; I mean, good paintings, valuable artifacts, antiques.’
In a quick mathematical exercise, if in 11 years Evo Morales received 13,000 gifts, and in 10 years Rafael Correa gathered 11,000 gifts, how could Fidel Castro only receive 17,000 in four decades? Although there’s no evidence that Fidel was less inclined to receive presents, if that were the case, there isn’t an institutional or legal mechanism which regulates with transparency the reception of such gifts either, so we have no way to know for sure.
Cuba needs a Code of Ethics for Public Officials
We cannot hold President Miguel Díaz-Canel accountable for the lack of transparency of previous governments, but we can do it in his case. An easy-to-implement measure which would have a high political impact could be regulating the fate of presidential gifts. Turning them into the people’s patrimony would be a good example, and it would be in agreement with the accountability he demands of his cabinet. He should learn from the good practices of Correa in Ecuador.
More than a year has passed since he assumed the presidency. He went on a tour of official visits during which he received and delivered diplomatic presents. It’s time that Cubans knew the fate of the gifts presented to public servants, as well as who receives those which are paid for with their taxes. Few in Cuba know that, for example, before he left the White House, Obama received from Raúl Castro a wooden bust of Abraham Lincoln along with 205 Cuban cigars, a bottle of rum and two books. The rest of his family received 2354.78 dollars’ worth of Cuban gifts. The President of the United States delivered all the presents to his country’s National Archive, and us Cubans never heard about them.

Keeping a record of gifts contributes to reducing the risk of corruption and foreign influence, it increases the trust of citizens in their officials, it sets limits to their behavior and it increases transparency and institutional and popular control. Aside from being a matter of ethics, it is an economic necessity for Cuba. Wouldn’t the resources resulting from an eventual auction of presidential gifts be necessary? It would only be a question of deciding which would become the patrimony of the Cuban nation and which wouldn’t.
Perhaps many ask themselves whether there is a market for the auctioning of highly valuable gifts in Cuba. The example of Ecuador shows that most of the buyers were foreign residents, which proves that this could be another way to acquire international currency. None of the countries I mentioned above, except for Venezuela, has an economy as depressed as Cuba’s. In their case, there’s less need to regulate the possession of the presents received by their officials.

Diplomatic gifts belong to the State and they need to be recorded. This information must be public and detailed: who gave them, what the gift consists of and where will it remain. It’s left to be seen whether the presidential decrees and codes of conduct in the countries mentioned are really respected, but the institutionalization of transparency is by and large a demand of all peoples.
As I’ve pointed out, perhaps some presents could remain in the President’s possession, but there should always be a public record of these and they should be considered the patrimony of all citizens. Regulating the gifts of the people is not only urgent; it would be an easy political victory for whoever does it. I can think of no legitimate reasons not to do it.
The President should take measures in that respect. The current Cuban practice regarding the exchange of diplomatic gifts is contradictory with socialist rhetoric and it’s too reminiscent of the preceding governments. That an official temporarily promoted to public office receive a present doesn’t mean it’s his. He should be the channel through which that gift should reach its true recipient: the people

(CNN Español) — Los vándalos han destruido, quemado y saqueado en Santiago de Chile y otras ciudades del país numerosas instalaciones públicas y comercios privados. Los daños ascienden a centenares de millones de dólares.
Las preguntas clave son: ¿por qué lo han hecho?, ¿quiénes lo han hecho? y ¿cómo impedir que lo sigan haciendo?
A mi juicio, lo han hecho por dos razones esenciales: para castigar las posiciones anticomunistas del presidente Sebastián Piñera reflejadas en el Grupo de Lima y para destruir el modelo alterno al colectivismo estatista presente en la Venezuela del cuestionado mandatario Nicolás Maduro.
Chile se ha convertido en la primera economía de América Latina por medio de la libertad y el mercado y ese ejemplo se había trasladado a Perú y a otras naciones de la región.
No es verdad que hay que buscar el origen del vandalismo en las desigualdades. Chile había logrado la hazaña de reducir sustancialmente el número de pobres mientras caía el coeficiente Gini que mide las diferencias entre el quintil más próspero y el más bajo de la población.
Tampoco es cierto que los desórdenes ocurrieron por el alza del precio del transporte público en algo menos de un 4%. Esa fue la coartada. Mucho más ha subido el salario mínimo que el precio del transporte.
¿Quiénes se han dedicado a vandalizar en Chile? Creo, firmemente, que la responsabilidad cae sobre los comunistas y sobre la legión de jóvenes que convierten las protestas en una violenta aventura que les aumenta los niveles de adrenalina. Disfrutan quemando y haciendo daño.
La forma de combatir este fenómeno para que no se produzca más es, a mi juicio, la mano dura y no hacer concesiones. Chile debe aplicar todo el peso de la ley y el Código Penal. No debe excederse de esos límites, pero sí agotarlos. A grandes males, grandes remedios. Los vándalos deben aprender que sus actos tienen consecuencias. No hay otra forma eficaz de actuar.”

Había un centenar trabajando en los servicios de extras, funcionaba todo como una compañía de infantería no motorizada. Era una serie, y firmaban las 10 escenas del día. Los extras se rebelaron. Solo les pagan $75.00 al día y trabajan 12 horas seguidas. Les dan algo de comer a las 8:00 am y no ven bocado hasta después de la 1:00 pm, luego de pasarse 5 horas caminando bajo techo en aire acondicionado son enviados a almorzar, algunos no encuentran donde sentarse y algunos platos se terminan.
La rebelión estallo por mejoras salariales, quieren que les paguen al menos 80 dólares por 8 horas y Tiempo Extra, tiempo extra acá le dicen Over-time, las horas que trabajas pasadas las 8 horas y que se deben pagar tiempo y medio; Es decir, si en 8 horas estas recibiendo 80 dólares, eso es 8 dólares por hora, pero pasadas esas 8 horas cada hora adicional debe ser pagada a 12.
Salieron todos a la calle, o sea al parqueo, comenzaron a tirar las ropas que les habían dado, y las que estaban colgadas en vestuarios, viraron las mesas y sillas del “comedor” y las carpas que protegían de la llovizna, se acumularon luego en los sets de grabación e impidieron que se firmaran las escenas que faltaban.
Los productores, directores de los extras y demás recogieron todo en 7 camiones y se largaron, la policía protegió la propiedad publica y los extras escaparon.
Ninguno sera llamado nuevamente. Los próximos extras recibirán, en vez de un aumento, 75 dólares por 12 horas de trabajo, y el mismo maltrato, tendrán que traer sus mismas ropas, prendas, a cada filmación, y también algunos se quedaran sin alcanzar algunos platos del almuerzo y no tendrán jamas comida.
Que se habrán pensado, que esto es America Latina?!
Acá si te portas mal te castigan, te encierran, te botan, te marcan para toda la vida. Que es eso de premiar al maleducado? Que es eso de darle al antisocial lo que pide? Al delincuente, al que roba y rompe, nada.

hay dos cosas que no son ciertas en la historia, una es cuanto se les paga, efectivamente, se paga 100 por dia, y 50 adicionales si pasan de las 10 horas de grabacion
pero ese dinero no va directamente a los extras, va a unos Coordinadores, que se quedan con 25 y a los extras le dan 75; los 50 si son para los extras, luego de 10 horas continuas de trabajo.
Que es lo otro incierto en la historia?

Esta historia me recuerda la de Reagan con la huelga de los controladores aereos en el primer año de su presidencia.
Según leí en alguna parte, el incidente en cuestión fue lo que indicó a los soviéticos ¨con éste no se puede jugar¨.
Que los sovieticos pensaran eso es parte del juego que se traen los comunistas y demas totalitarios hoy en todo el mundo, ven en cada revuelta una esperanza para sus planes permanentes; al ver que Reagan resolvía el tema como se debía, se hacen chichi y popo. Pero que distinto lo que han formado Lenin y Pinera este mes, nada que ver con el gran Ronald.
Es el imperio del orden y la ley. Es el imperio de la oferta, la demanda y la ley: ud tiene algo que ofrecer y hay alguien que le da a ud algo a cambio, algo que ud necesita; ud firma un documento aceptando la transacción; ud no puede venir luego a quemarlo todo porque NO ESTA DE ACUERDO y es INJUSTO, si no esta de acuerdo no firme, no negocie, siga adelante. Esto es la ley del mercado, el libre intercambio cumpliendo las leyes. El que no cumple las leyes se va, se castiga, NO SE PREMIA. Pero en aquellos países no hay ni orden ni ley, hay destrucción y chantaje, van muy mal, son caldo de cultivo para que vuelvan los totalitarios a hacer fiesta, los Ladrones, los delincuentones que estan alla por todas partes: es el reino de la delincuencia, así de siempre.

“CUBA SI” TIENE MUCHAS LECTURAS
“After years of turning a deaf ear to the suggestions of economists and many others who requested measures to retain the millions of dollars lost to the flight of capital abroad by way of purchases by private individuals, the government has issued a financial and commercial response.
This sort of electronic re-dollarization will have a favorable influence on the situation of consumers, but it leaves many unanswered questions about its effective linkage with other indispensable transformations which are still pending. The problem is that these are much more important in order to channel the productive economy and achieve sustained growth of the GDP than opening a new market area.
The first surprising thing is that, after five years of waiting for the necessary monetary and exchange unification, a third participant is allowed into the national market: the previously snubbed US dollar. It’s also true that it was never really banished, since the CUC is nothing more than its overvalued stand-in. However, after so many years of gleeful minting, I very much doubt that anyone knows for certain how much dollar is left in a CUC.
It’s true that we the consumers can catch a break with these measures. If in both the dollar and CUC markets the prices are indeed relieved from the enormous tax now called collection contribution, and they are made to correspond with similar prices in our region −not with those in New York or London−, then everyone’s income will have a relative increase. Only the so-called mules[1] will be affected, but only partially.
The emphasis made on the fact that the specialized dollar shops –which I propose to call TEDs (Spanish acronym)– will sell the vaguely defined high- and mid-range products, leaves a wide segment of the market open for the mules. Time will tell for how long. The true thing is that similar prices, good brands and proper warranty services offer unobjectionable advantages in the case of the new TEDs for independent businesses and traders.
However, I’m not at all sure about the stated objective that these measures should succeed in reactivating the national industry. Firstly, because if the paltry earnings of these 70 initial TEDs are used for investment in a productive sector that’s nearly in ruins, it would be like giving a glass of water to a boatful of castaways. And there would be no resources to expand the chain to the rest of the country or increase the volume of its sales.
Secondly, if the banks loan these new funds in dollars to the government to carry out investments in production… God help us! Many will become concerned, perhaps for the first time in their lives, about the good functioning of the country’s investment plan, and they will pray that the banks won’t default on payments resulting in an immobilization of deposits, or worse, in an indefinite suspension of payments to savers.
Nevertheless, the latter scenario need not be like that, since the dollars will enter and will only be withdrawn by means of the magnetic card. In my understanding, cash withdrawals from these accounts will be carried out in CUCs, in the official exchange rate. That’s why I refer to an electronic re-dollarization, and I believe there’s more. I suspect that they’re working against the clock for a Cuban cryptocurrency, which would be another way to siphon stray currency into government coffers in exchange for electrons.
In general, I celebrate the measure and I believe it will result in an improvement and a rearrangement of the Cuban market. A market which will have to grow increasingly segmented and differentiated if it wants to modernize and adjust to the Cuban socio-economic reality of today.
I’m only worried that we continue to beat around the branches while the trunk of the economy remains untouched, and asphyxiated by the narrow models of the bureaucratic economic mechanism. There’s neither an Asian-style opening to socialist market relations, nor an empowerment of workers’ groups by means of socialist self-management. It looks like, for the State, the motto continues to be: ‘Nobody touches anything, only I can touch!’

En realidad pienso exactamente lo contrario. La ira y la frustración son emociones no moderadas. Para mi las mejores cosas salen de las emociones controladas: de la reflexión, no de la pasión.
